  CLIENT: Restaurant Opportunities Center of New York (ROC-NY)

 
 


Founded in 2001, the Restaurant Opportunities Center of New York (ROC-NY) works to improve conditions for restaurant workers and to raise public recognition of the worker's contributions to the life of New York City.

 
    GOALS  
 
  • Provide advice and assistance in communicating ROC-NY's agenda through media relations.
  • Make ROC-NY's work and the conditions facing restaurant workers visible through media advocacy and story placement.
  • Promote the restaurant Colors, New York's first cooperative restaurant, which ROC-NY helped create.
 
    ACTIONS  
 
  • Promoted reports on the restaurant industry and its shortcomings as related to worker's lives.
  • Publicized lawsuits against restaurants that violate worker rights.
  • Staged press conference for launch of Colors restaurant, which attracted the New York Times, CNN, National Public Radio, all the local network television affiliates, and international reporters.
 
    RESULTS  
 
  • Successfully branded ROC-NY as the leading advocacy group for restaurant workers in New York.
  • Obtained media coverage of ROC-NY's advocacy campaigns and reports on conditions in restaurants.
  • Placed a New York Times feature on the successful settlement of a lawsuit against the Smith and Wollensky Group, resulting in a group of workers garnering over $150,000 in back pay and overtime.
  • Global media coverage of Colors, the worker owned restaurant that ROC-NY helped establish.
