CLIENT: Center for Constitutional Rights (CCR) |
| |
The Center for Constitutional Rights (CCR) is a non-profit legal and educational organization dedicated to protecting and advancing the rights guaranteed by the U.S. Constitution and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. In the wake of 9/11, CCR was the first civil rights group to challenge in court the Bush Administration's program to dismantle civil liberties, justify torture, and engage in racial profiling. |
| |
GOALS |
| |
- Underscore the Bush Administration's lawless establishment of a detention center in Guantánamo Bay, Cuba, and in other locations around the world.
- Highlight the inhumane conditions at Guantánamo and the plight of its detainees.
- Draw attention to the government's wide-net round-up, lengthy detention, and abuse of South Asian and Arab men held on immigration infractions.
- Expose the practice of "extraordinary rendition," whereby alleged suspects are sent to third party countries for interrogation often involving torture.
| |
ACTIONS |
| |
- Developed media and messaging strategies to meet CCR's goals, such as lawsuit promotion and the use of human interest feature stories.
- Conducted media training for scores of lawyers who work under the rubric of the Guantánamo Global Justice Initiative to bring habeas corpus petitions on behalf of detainees.
| |
RESULTS |
| |
- Development of a global network of journalists interested in the issues pertaining to post-9/11 backlash and the establishment of the Guantánamo detention center.
- Established CCR as the go-to media source for reliable information and incisive commentary.
- Placed hundreds of stories, including several front-page stories in the New York Times and the Washington Post, as well as video pieces on 60 Minutes and other broadcast media.
